Understanding Liquidation in Leveraged Trading

When you trade with leverage on Hyperliquid, you're essentially borrowing funds to increase your position size. For example, with 10x leverage, a $1,000 margin allows you to control a $10,000 position. While this amplifies potential profits, it equally amplifies losses.

The liquidation price is the critical threshold where your position will be automatically closed by the exchange. This happens when your margin balance falls below the maintenance margin requirement, the minimum collateral needed to keep your position open.

For long positions, liquidation occurs when the price drops. For short positions, it's when the price rises. The higher your leverage, the closer your liquidation price is to your entry, meaning smaller market movements can trigger liquidation.

Long Position Example

You go long BTC at $95,000 with 10x leverage. Your liquidation is around $85,975. If BTC drops ~9.5%, you lose your entire margin.

Short Position Example

You short BTC at $95,000 with 10x leverage. Your liquidation is around $104,025. If BTC rises ~9.5%, you lose your entire margin.
